Poignant photo

The photograph of the terror-struck child caught in Kolkata’s violence (Nov. 22) told the readers much more than what seven columns of news could tell. On seeing the picture, the goons, and leaders of the goons responsible for Wednesday’s happenings should hang their heads in shame. Taslima certainly has not done as much damage to Kolkata’s civil society as the violence did.

R. Venkataraman,

Chennai

The photograph of student Sneha Tripathi being escorted by a policeman was worth a thousand words.

The violence has instilled fear in the child’s mind ... a fear which will perhaps never be erased. I convey my sympathies to her and all those who suffered due to the mob violence on Wednesday.

Mark Owen Fernandez,

Chennai

The photo of the terror stricken little girl is poignant. Those who perpetrate mob violence should ask themselves whether they would let their children suffer such an agony. What is wrong in the government extending Taslima’s visa? The feminist writer had a narrow escape in August this year when she was attacked by activists of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen in Hyderabad and now she is at the receiving end of fundamentalist violence in Kolkata. The government should not yield to the pressure of religious bigots.

The AIMF’s contention that the situation went out of its control is unacceptable. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was right in saying the violence tarnished the city’s name. He deserves praise for calling in the army before the situation got out of control.

I. Aarthi,

Chennai
