Corrections and clarifications

  • The caption of the accompanying Reuters photograph in a report “India sets terms for a cap on greenhouse gas emissions” (“International” page, November 22, 2007) was: “Global Concern: (From left) New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, Australia’s Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, China’s Premier Wen Jiabao, Manmohan Singh and Japan’s Yasuo Fukuda at a session on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Singapore on Wednesday.” Mr. Fukuda had been cropped out of the picture, with only a small part of his face seen extreme right. (The original caption was: “… The leaders are (L-R) Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Helen Clark, Australia’s Alexander Downer, China’s Premier Wen Jiabao, India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Japan’s Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.”)

  • A sentence in the fifth paragraph of an article “Sensitive data lost in Britain” (“International” page, November 22, 2007), was: “The discs were lost in transit between the offices of the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in Washington and the National Audit Office in London.” Hasan Suroor clarifies that Washington is a place in north-east England and its full name is Washington, Tyne and Wear. (The report was on how the British Government has admitted that it had lost personal data, including bank account and national insurance details, of 25 million Britons in an unprecedented breach of data protection.)

  • The second paragraph in a report “Swamy urges Centre to dismiss State Government” (November 22, 2007) was: “Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Dr. Swamy said even the constituents of the Democratic Progressive Front such as the Pattali Makkal Katchi and the Congress had criticised the Government for ‘poor’ law and order situation ….” The expansion of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led DPA is the Democratic Progressive Alliance. (On March 23, 2007, we had published a correction on this. The error then was giving the expansion of the DPA, in a report “Manmohan Singh urged not to accept Karnataka’s plea on Cauvery award”, as the Democratic People’s Alliance.)
