Blazing a new ‘Nalanda Trail’

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: A unique exhibition, “The Nalanda Trail: Buddhism in India, China and Southeast Asia,” was dedicated here on Wednesday as a project of the East Asia Summit (EAS).

The Summit is a new forum, comprising the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, China, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

The thematic exhibition, organised by Singapore at the Asian Civilisations Museum, is designed to blaze a new trail in international harmony.

International institution

In focus is the promotion of the proposed Nalanda University in India as an international institution of higher learning and research on a range of subjects, including peace and security studies.

Welcoming the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other EAS leaders, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the objective was to create the new university as an icon of Asian renaissance. Dr. Singh said the objective was to set up an international university through an international treaty.
