Sandeep stars in IA’s win

Principal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Sandeep Singh struck on either side of half-time as Indian Airlines scored its first win in two matches, beating Border Security Force (BSF) 3-1 in the Pool B super league match in the 44th Nehru hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Thursday.

Having drawn its opening encounter against Namdhari XI, Indian Airlines started against BSF in right earnest. Sandeep fired the first salvo in the fourth minute, through a penalty corner conversion. Samir Dad made it 2-0 in the 25th minute through a field effort.

Sharanjit Singh pulled one back for BSF, four minutes into the second half, but rough tackles cost them dearly. A foul in the 54th minute handed Airlines a penalty stroke and Sandeep Singh made no mistake in scoring the winning goal.

Namdharis struggle

IHF Under-21 held Namdhari XI 3-3. IHF took early lead in the second minute when Deewakar Ram converted a penalty corner. Gurcharan Singh found the equaliser in the 20th minute only to see Cheeyana A.B. (25th) put the IHF Under-21 ahead again.

Gurcharan came good as he struck the second equaliser, two minutes from half-time. On changing ends, the Namdharis played defensively and found the target through Sher Singh (63rd). But Deewakar spoiled the Namdharis’ party when he slotted in the equaliser in the 69th minute.

In Pool A, Bharat Petroleum defeated PSB 3-1. The two teams finished their league matches earning six points apiece. PSB has a plus-six goal difference, while Bharat Petroleum has plus-two. Amar (13th), Hari (29th) and Paramjeet (46th) were the scorers for Bharat Petroleum, while Sandeep Singh (35th) struck for PSB. Despite the loss, PSB has ensured its place in the semifinal, while Bharat Petroleum will have to wait for the result of the last league match between Indian Oil and PNB XI.
