NEW DELHI: Sharmila Nicollet shot the best card so far in the event, a level-par 72, to grab a five-stroke lead going into the final day, in the 40th Northern India Open ladies amateur golf championship at the Delhi Golf Club course on Thursday. Starting a stroke behind overnight leader Neha Tripathi, Sharmila opened a huge lead with her near-flawless round. Sharmila, fresh from her victories at both the Punjab and Noida Opens, had one birdie and a bogey in the third round helping her to an aggregate of 17-over 233. Nalini Singh was second after she shot 76 for a total of 238, while Shruti Khanna was third with 241. Neha plummeted as she shot 86 after her back-to-back 80s for a total of 246. The scores: Sharmila Nicollet (82, 79, 72) 233, Nalini Singh (79, 83, 76) 238, Shruti Khanna (82, 80, 79) 241, Gauri Monga (86, 77, 79) 242. Modern School in finalModern School (Barakhamba Road) defeated Bal Bharti School (Noida) 4-2 to reach the final of the fourth Modernite hockey invitation tournament here on Thursday. Modern School will take on Bal Bharti School (Pitampura), which blanked Amity International School (Noida) 6-0. Cavalry posts winArgentine Santiago de Estrada slammed in five goals while Tunku Ismail Ibrahim struck three as Cavalry defeated Sixt nine-and-a-half goals to six in the league match of the Havana Cavalry Gold Cup 10-goal polo tournament at the Jaipur Polo Ground here on Thursday. Starting with half-a-goal on handicap, Cavalry made a brilliant start scoring four goals in the first chukker. Sixt could never recover from that shock despite William Lucas firing five goals. In the other match, Dhruvpal Godara (2), Ravi Rathore (3) and Gaurav Sahgal (2) steered Sahgal-Jindal to 7-5 win against Jaipur Polo Company (JPC). Manupal Godara scored four and Angad Singh struck one for JPC, but their efforts were too late to catch up with the combine of Sahgal-Jindals.
