BANGALORE: ASC warded off a late challenge from ADE Sports Club and collected full points with a 5-3 victory in the BDFA super division football league championship at the Football Stadium here on Thursday. At half time, ASC led 4-0. Sourav Das hammered three goals for ASC (ninth, 34th and 70th minutes). Thirunavakarasu (10th) and Thyagaraj (29th) netted the other goals for the winner. For ADE, Donald (48th), Juar (72nd) and Vinod (86th) found the net. ASC now has 12 points from 10 matches, while ADE has nine from 12 ties. In an ‘A’ division match, Rail Wheel Factory routed Universal FC 5-0. Satish (2), Lokesh, Naveen and Sugandar were the scorers. Earlier on Wednesday, Hindustan Aeronautics Sports Club (HASC) took a step closer to the title after defeating SAI 6-1. HASC’s Bimal Minz slammed three goals in the fourth, 54th and 63rd minutes. The other scorers were Rajendra Prasad (23rd), Xavier Vijaya Kumar (63rd) and Murali (67th). SAI’s lone success came via a penalty kick converted by Vishal. The spot kick was awarded after HASC’s foreign import Shamaki brought down SAI defender Akram in the penalty area. HASC has 32 points from 11 matches and will take on Southern Blues on November 30 in a crucial tie. Badminton tournamentThe new National senior badminton circuit gets underway here in the second week of December with the Canara Bank all-India senior ranking tournament. This event will be played at the K. Raheja Badminton Stadium from December 8 to 12. The total prize money on offer will be Rs. 5 lakh. The qualifying rounds will be played on December 8 and the main draw begins the next day. Events will be held in men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s singles and women’s doubles. The winner of the men’s singles is likely to get around Rs. 1 lakh. The top players of the country will participate in the tournament as the performances here will be considered for selection into the Indian team for the Thomas Cup, Uber Cup and the European circuit during February-March 2008. The event will be held under the aegis of the Karnataka Badminton Association and will be co-ordinated by Padukone Sports Management. While Canara Bank will be the main sponsor, HDFC Mutual Fund and Yonex are the co-sponsors. Christel House golfThe Christel House Open 2007, an international charity golf event organised by Christel House (an NGO for under-privileged children) and presented by Puma Sports India Pvt. Ltd., will be held on Friday at the KGA.
The Christel House Open 2007 will be an afternoon affair with 50 teams of two golfers each participating. Sports seminarA seminar to debate to various options to develop sports in the State will be organised by the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports at Yavanika on Saturday. Eminent sportspersons, administrators, coaches and directors of physical education will attend the seminar. Swimming ‘habba’The Indian Swimming Foundation, headed by Olympian Nisha Millet, will conduct swimming meet for the Airtel Bengalooru Habba-2007 on December 2 at the Bowring Institute pool. The meet is open to non-medallist swimmers in the age group of 7-16 years. For details and entry forms can be had from www.nishamillet.com. Taekwondo teamA four-member Indian takewondo team — two men and two women — will participate in the Asian qualification tournament at Ho Chi Minh City from November 28 to 30. The teams: Men: Sandeep Kumar (SSCB), K. Nakul Malhotra (M.P.) Women: Sanoujam Surbala (Manipur), Shristi Singh (U.P.) Coaches: Fariborz Askan, Prem Kumar.
