TAMBARAM: A five-year-old girl was run over by a private van, moments after she got down from the vehicle that picked up her up from school, in East Tambaram, on Thursday.
LKG student V. Pavithra died on the spot. A student of the Air Force School, housed on the Indian Air Force Station premises, Pavithra usually got picked up by her father, Velmurugan, and both of them returned home on a bicycle.
The family lives on Mariamman Koil Street, Vinobaji Nagar, just a few hundred metres away from the Air Force Station’s main entrance.
Unusual day
As Velmurugan, a musician in a band, had to go on some work on the fateful day, arrangements were made for Pavithra to return home by the private van.
Soon after the van stopped, Pavithra got down and walked ahead of the vehicle. The van driver, Prabhakaran, who did not notice this, knocked her down.
Residents and traders who were witness to the accident rushed her to a private hospital nearby, where she was declared dead on arrival, traffic police said.
Her body was taken to the Chromepet General Hospital for post-mortem. It would be handed over to her father on Friday morning, said the hospital authorities. Velmurugan has an 18-month-old son, neighbours said.
