‘Science mela impressive’

Results of evaluation within two months

Training programme for students

THODUPUZHA: The National Innovation Foundation has lauded the annual science, social science, mathematics and special school work experience fairs in the State.

Director of Public Instruction M. Shivashankar said here on Thursday that the National Innovation Foundation, under the Government of India Science and Technology Department, had identified several presentations at the 2006 edition of the School Fairs as innovations. Last year, the officials of the Foundation had identified seven presentations as innovations. Of these, it had chosen three innovations that could be patented, or for which commercial production could be possible, said Mr. Shivashankar here on Thursday.

He said the evaluation process was elaborate and the involvement of the National Innovation Foundation had given children in Kerala national exposure. The presentations identified at the 2006 Fairs were part of the National Innovation Competition. The final results of the evaluation by the National Innovation Foundation was expected within two months.

T. J. James, national coordinator, Scouts and Documentation of the National Innovation Foundation this year’s science mela was impressive. He specially referred to presentations in which the children had documented community knowledge in areas such as botanical practices.

The State Education Department has also taken the initiative to help students make their innovations a part of their future lives. Students who came up with prize-winning presentations last year were given training during the vacation.
