KOCHI: DP World Cochin (India Gateway Terminal Private Ltd.) on Thursday awarded the civil construction contract for the first phase of the International Container Transhipment Terminal at Vallarpadam to Simplex Consortium, a civil engineering and construction company. The value of the contract is estimated at $150 million. Announcing the contract, Ganesh Raj, senior vice-president and managing director of DP World Subcontinent region, said all the stakeholders involved in the project were committed to completing the project on time. Amitabh Mundhra, director, Simplex Infrastructure, said the project would have international quality standards. The preliminary design of the project was approved by the Cochin Port Trust in November , 2006. Subsequently, DP World Cochin issued the tender in June 2007. After the tender was closed, Royal Haskoning, consultant to the ICTT project, conducted an evaluation in liaison with DP World Cochin before awarding the contract. The construction is expected to begin next month. DP World Cochin has the mandate to build ICTT and operate it for 30 years.
