THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: India has emerged a frontrunner in the global race to design and develop aerospace vehicles for civil and defence applications, director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) B.N.Suresh said here on Thursday. Delivering the inaugural address at a Symposium on Applied Aerodynamics and Design of Aerospace Vehicles, he said ISRO was inching closer to the development of the Mark 3 version of the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle that would be capable of lobbing a satellite of four tonnes into orbit. Mr.Suresh said India had made significant strides in the development of high speed aerodynamics and reusable launch vehicles. “The space capsule recovery experiment was a major milestone.” He said air breathing propulsion systems were being seen as a potential development in the near future. The ultimate objective, Mr. Suresh said, would be to bring down the cost of launching satellites to less than $5,000. Mr.Suresh highlighted the need for a multidisciplinary approach to develop a knowledge base in key areas of aerodynamic research.
