KOCHI: The district administration has identified three acres spread over the two villages of Kakkanad (2 acres) and Vazhakala (I acre) for rehabilitating people of Edappally north and south villages who will be affected by the land acquisition for the rail connectivity of the proposed Vallarpadam International Container Transhipment Terminal. District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said only those who would lose their houses would be rehabilitated. As the number of beneficiaries is limited, the entire three acres would not be needed. The most ideal location would be selected for rehabilitation. However, as the area being identified is susceptible to water logging, about Rs. 10,000 would have to be spent per each cent of land to make it suitable for rehabilitation, sources said. There was much heartburn among the landowners of the Edappally north and south villages over the absence of rehabilitation despite losing their houses in the acquisition process. With this, rehabilitation for all those who would lose their houses in the four villages – Edappally north and south, Cheranalloor and Mulavukad – has been arranged.
