Anbumani Ramadoss to flag off three projects

Staff Reporter

Aimed at delivering better health care services in the State

Centre to provide Rs.100 crore; State to put in Rs.20 crore

Rs.2 crore for building of State Health and Family Welfare Institute

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Three prestigious projects aimed at delivering better health care services in the State’s public health sector will be flagged off by Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss here on Saturday.

Mr. Ramadoss will lay the foundation for the Super Specialty block of Medical College hospital here, which is being constructed at a cost of Rs.34 crore under the Rs.100-crore Centrally sponsored upgradation scheme, Pradhan Mantri’s Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).

First institution

While 13 medical colleges in the country have been chosen for being converted to Centres of Excellence under the PMSSY scheme by the Union Health Ministry, the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College has the distinction of being the first institution among these to launch the scheme.

While the Centre is providing Rs.100 crore, the State Government will be putting in another Rs.20 crore for the upgradation of MCH.

Out Patients’ block

Apart from the SS block, the medical college is also getting a new multi-storeyed Out Patients’ block and new buildings for postgraduate nursing and medical lab technology wings under PMSSY.

Overburdened

PMSSY scheme is, in the next three years, expected to change the face of MCH, which has been overburdened with a heavy patient load, staff shortage and inadequate infrastructure.

Mr. Ramadoss will also inaugurate the hi-tech MRI scan machine (GE 1.5 T Twin speed) that has been acquired by the Regional Cancer Centre at Rs.6.5 crore, from the State and Central government’s Plan funds.

None of the hospitals in the government sector, including medical colleges in the State, have MRI machines at present.

MRI scan machine

Apart from the machine at Sri Chitra Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, the MRI acquired by the RCC will be the first one in the government sector.

The machine, which has Spectro mammography and Prostrate Spectroscopy aids, will help in the early detection of breast and prostrate cancers.

The new building constructed for the State Health and Family Welfare Institute, the Health department’s core research and human resource training wing, is also being inaugurated by Mr. Ramadoss.

The building has been constructed with the European Commission assistance of Rs.2 crore.

Resource centre

The Institute, an autonomous centre, is the State Resource Centre for the National Rural Health Mission.

It is engaged in health systems research as well as providing training for health workers, doctors, nurses and other para medical staff.
