Concern over acute shortage of fertilizers in Perambalur

Special surveillance team to be set up, says Collector

PERAMBALUR: Agriculturists, who participated in the Farmers’ Grievances Day meeting here on Thursday, complained of an acute scarcity of fertilizers.
They urged the district administration to set up flying squads to check hoarding of Ammonium phosphate and other fertilisers.
Collector Anil Meshram, who presided over the meeting, assured the farmers that he would look into the issue and ensure prompt supply of fertilisers.
Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam secretary R. Raja Chidambaram complained that farmers were being exploited by the fertiliser dealers. Hoarding of ammonium sulphate, for instance, had hard hit the onion growers, he said.
District secretary of CPI-led Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam A. Venugopal said that non-availability of fertilisers had left farmers in a lurch. Fertilisers were being sold over and above the specified rates.
When the farmers pleaded for setting up of a flying squad comprising Agriculture and Revenue officials, the Collector assured that it would be set up shortly.
Sugarcane crushing season to start
The Collector said that the crushing season at the sugar mills at Eraiyur near here would commence on December 13.
The mills would also ensure prompt disbursement of procurement price announced by the State Government.
Replying to a grievance by Mr. Venugopal that the paucity of rainfall had caused extensive damage to maize, Mr. Meshram said that the district administration had submitted a report to the state government recommending for adequate compensation.
Plea for more water
A progressive farmer Nagarathinam pleaded for stepping up the discharge of waters through Ponnatrangarai and Pullampadi channels to ensure irrigation facilities for the tail-end farmers of Cauvery Delta.
