Farmers surprised as new Collector attends meeting

PERAMBALUR: Farmers who participated in the monthly ‘Grievances Day’ meeting held here on Thursday were taken by surprise when V. M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam, who will assume charge as Collector of Ariyalur on Friday, was also present at the meeting.
The Perambalur district administration has been convening the monthly ‘Farmers Grievances Day’ meeting at Perambalur and Ariyalur on turn system, as the nature of agriculture-related problems as well the jurisdiction of officials differed.
A section of farmers are elated that with the bifurcation of Perambalur district, the monthly meeting would be held every month both at Ariyalur and Perambalur. “This will expedite the redressal mechanism of our grievances,” they say.
Today’s meeting provided an opportunity to Mr. Nayagam to understand the farmers’ problems, they said.
Perambalur Collector Anil Meshram presided over the meeting.
