Tariff concession sought for treatment plants
Staff Reporter
‘Running treatment plant is a social service’ ‘Hence cost incurred should be compensated’
TIRUPUR: The Dyers Association of Tirupur has asked the Tamil Nadu Government to grant tariff concession for electricity used to run effluent treatment plants.
A delegation led by the association president, S. Samiappan, and general secretary K. Krishnan, met Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami and presented a memorandum pressing their demand.
Since treatment of effluents was for protecting the environment, it amounted to social service and hence was the demand, they said. The common effluent treatment plants would require huge volume of electricity.
The delegation said that 523 dyeing and bleaching factories have been establishing 20 plants at a cost of Rs.794.81 crore, while 152 factories established individual effluent treatment plants to re-use the water by installing reverse osmosis plants.
Claiming that this kind of massive attempt to ensure zero liquid discharge from textile processing houses could be seen nowhere in the world, the association said Tirupur would be the first one to attain such facility.
Consultation
The association said that they consulted experts at Anna University, Chennai, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, and obtained consent from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
The delegation said they had completed major part of the work with great financial difficulty. Crores of rupees have been paid as fine as directed by the High Court of Madras.
