TAMBARAM: Compactors – trucks that are capable of picking up bins and dumping garbage into them have been launched in Tambaram Municipality.

At a function in the local body’s premises on Thursday, officials and elected representatives were given a demonstration of how the truck works.

R.Sekar, Municipal Commissioner, said privatisation of primary and secondary collection of garbage was currently on and the compactor was deployed by the private contractor – Srinivasan Waste Management Services – in three wards of West Tambaram.

The important markets of the municipality were located in these three wards – 10, 35 and 36.

The contractor, Mr. Sekar said, had spent Rs. 15 lakh on the vehicle that has a capacity to carry 7 tonnes, and Rs. 7.5 lakh on the 20 bins, each with a capacity to store between 600 and 700 kg of waste. These bins would be deployed all over the three wards and picked up by the compactor to clear garbage.

The contractor would be paid at the rate of Rs.725 per tonne of garbage collected.

T. Srinivasan of the private agency, said the process of primary collection by workers and secondary collection by the compactors would save time, cost and manpower and more efficient than the conventional methods.

Compactors were introduced in the southern suburbs for the first time in Alandur Municipality in November last and were purchased from the general funds of the local body, officials.

The Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply was planning to deploy more such compactors in addition to ‘hook lift’ vehicles in more municipalities to assist the local body in handling garbage.
