COMING UP: The road overbridge near the Pallavaram Railway Station is one of the projects that are expected to benefit because of the Defence Ministry’s decision to part with some of its land in the area.
TAMBARAM: Putting an end to the prolonged delay that has now stretched to more than five years, the Ministry of Defence has finally given its nod to the State Highways Department to commence work on three key projects in the southern suburbs of Chennai.
In a communication on October 12, the Ministry gave its ‘enter upon’ agreement to the State government. Senior engineers of the Highways Department said that it could now take over 4.26 acres of land required for completing pending works.
Land identified
In return, the State government had identified 8.26 acres of land in three different places around Pallavaram, which the Ministry has agreed to acquire.
Following the Ministry’s communication, the projects wing of the Highways Department has floated tenders at an estimated cost of Rs. 5.23 crore to complete the remaining portion of work on incomplete subway to replace railway level crossing (LC No.19) at Pallavaram.
Work on completing six spans at the road overbridge to replace the railway level crossing (LC No. 24) at Pallavaram would also resume in addition to the small portion of work to link Thillai Ganga Nagar subway with Grand Southern Trunk Road as part of the Inner Ring Road project.
In Pallavaram, the Southern Railway is yet to complete its portion and it should speed up the work losing no further time, the engineers said.
The delay had tested the patience of residents of these areas . Several meetings and demonstrations in protest against the delay in completing these projects were held.
The officials are also confident of a similar positive move from the Ministry to part with 25 acres of land in Indian Air Force’s Civil Lines in Tambaram for the bus terminus project in this town.
