Fisherwomen’s Federation rejects Swaminathan Committee report
NAGAPATTINAM: Fishermen and women of Nagapattinam district under the banner of National Coastal Protection Campaign (NCPC) on Wednesday demanded the Centre to strictly implement Coastal Regulation Zone Notification in its original form and give up the move to implement the Coastal Zone Management Notification 2007.
Addressing a public meeting on the occasion of World Fishermen’s Day here on Wednesday, members of Fisherwomen’s Federation of Nagapattinam district and members of the Vanga Kadal Meen Thozhilalar Sangam rejected the M. S. Swaminathan Committee report on fishermen. They also demanded the Centre to enact a legislation ensuring that the coast and the sea belonged to fishermen.
A large number of fishermen and women attended the meeting. Leaders of fishermen associations pointed out that the Centre and the State Governments were implementing projects in favour of multinational companies. They said that the natural resources of the sea and their livelihood were being destroyed.
Several leaders including Markandan, former vice-chancellor of Gandhigram Rural University, alleged that the committee that was formed under the chairmanship of M. S. Swaminathan had made recommendations in favour of multinational companies and big industrialists.
S. Rajendran, fishermen leader, delivered a special address on behalf of National Coastal Protection Campaign.
