Plea to expand Ariyalur cement factory

ARIYALUR: The Perambalur district wing of All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has urged the State Government to expand the Tamil Nadu Cement Corporation-owned Ariyalur Cement Factory.
A resolution, adopted at its meeting held here recently, urged the government to reconsider its decision to import cement and, instead, expand the factory. The factory, the resolution said, owned a large extent of limestone-rich land which was yet to be fully explored. Expansion of the factory would step up productivity, thereby eliminating the need for import.
The meeting pleaded for similar expansion of the Sugar Factory at Eraiyur near Perambalur with enhanced crushing capacity so as to ensure prompt issue of cutting orders to sugarcane-growers.
The meeting, through a resolution, urged the government to decentralise the distribution of assistances to the members of the Physical Labour and Construction Workers’ Welfare Board. This would expedite the disbursement of assistances to the needy without any delay.
Another resolution pleaded for provision of job opportunity to all the families whose lands had been acquired for the Jayamkondam Lignite Power Project.
Referring to the growing population in the municipal towns of Perambalur, Jayamkondam and Ariyalur, the meeting adopted a resolution pleading for recruitment of additional sanitary workers. These towns, which were village panchayats till a few years ago, had only limited number of sanitary workers.
Resolutions pleading for pension scheme for over-head tank operators in village panchayats and extending support to the proposed ‘road roko’ stir in protest against the spiralling prices, were also adopted.
District president A. Venugopal presided over the meeting. District general secretary T. Dhandapandi was among those who spoke.
