SCs break coconuts in Nalgonda temple

S. Ramu

MANGALAPALLY (NALGONDA DT): It’s indeed a clear case of Dalit assertion. In a tit for tat reprisal, SCs of Mangalapally of Nakrekal mandal have broken coconuts in the sanctum sanctorum of the village temple, the act that had angered the priest in the past.

“The priest performed ‘homam’ (a ritual) with the help of a group of pandits as part of purification (samprokshana) of the temple three days ago. He did so as a penance for the entry of Dalits into the sanctum sanctorum against his command,” B. Anjaiah, a mason, told The Hindu on Thursday.

The priest allegedly had not allowed the same Anjaiah to break a coconut in the sanctum sanctorum in the past. The dust created by the priest five months ago had settled down with the intervention of the village elders.

What angered the Dalits now is the latest ‘act of purification’ by the same priest.

“The priest warned of withdrawing his services to the temple as he is not happy with the entry of Dalits into the sanctum sanctorum. We don’t know who permitted him to take up the ‘homam’. We condemn the caste discrimination of upper castes,” Nakerakanti Anjaiah of the MRPS , said.
