IHF presents cheques

Bangalore: The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) presented cheques for Rs. 1,50,000 to each player of the Indian team that won the Asia Cup in Chennai in September.

The chief coach Joaquim Carvalho and the support staff were also given cheques for amounts ranging from Rs. 1,50,000 to Rs. 50,000.

The informal function was held at the SAI Southern Campus shortly after the Indian hockey camp players concluded their practice match here on Thursday evening.

The IHF vice-president, R.K. Shetty, was present on the occasion while Carvalho called the players and the support staff to the high table and presented them the cheques.

“The decision to give a financial incentive to the players was announced by IHF president K.P.S. Gill on the day we won the Asia Cup but we were waiting for an appropriate occasion to distribute these cheques.

“We then decided to do it during the course of the camp here when everyone is present. It was also decided to keep it a day after the State Bank of India function that honoured the players. K.P.S. Gill was expected to attend both these functions but unfortunately he could not make it,” said R.K. Shetty.

The SAI Southern Centre regional director, Shyam Sundar, exhorted the players to keep striving hard and win more laurels for the nation.
