CHENNAI: Except Yasin Merchant in the men’s section and Geet Sethi in the Masters category all other Indians bowed out in the early phase of the knock-out stage on Friday in the World snooker championship being held in Korat, Thailand. Mechant edged Vincent Muldoon of Ireland to enter the pre-quarterfinal round. The Indian won 52-59, 66-8, 28-51, 73-15, 53-35, 118-9, 72-35. Merchant plays his last-16 match against Anthony Davies. In the Master’s section, Sethi, outclassed Kieran McMahon of Northern Ireland going the distance. The Indian had taken a 3-0 lead before his rival caught up to set up a fascinating seventh frame contest. Sethi won 68-42, 57-17, 52-16, 39-61, 11-56, 40-66, 68-35. Earlier Vidya did well to advance to the quarterfinal beating Yu Ching-Ching of Hong Kong 4-1. But in the last eight she had no answer to the Irish opponent Michelle Sherwin’s brilliance. Michelle won in straight frames 55-3, 76-33, 49-29, 49-37.
