NAMAKKAL: It is a portrait of Thiruvalluvar. But not drawn with lines and shades. It is made up of 1,330 couplets from Tirukkural, written in miniscule letters.
K. Shalini, the artist who drew the portrait, is a B.A. English student studying in Kandaswami Kandar’s College in Paramathi Velur.
She has painstakingly scribed all the couplets to make the portrait.
She started drawing portraits while studying in Standard X at her native place, Kannankulam in Tirunelveli.
“My passion for drawing increased when I got a prize in the drawing competition held in our school. Then my mother encouraged me to develop drawing skills,” she recalls.
She drew the inspiration to learn Tirukkural fully from her grandfather Muthunadar, who, she says, knows all the couplets by heart.
When she struck upon the idea of drawing a portrait using couplets, she managed to draw a mini portrait of Thiruvalluvar with 25 couplets.
“Then I thought I should try to draw a portrait of Thiruvalluvar using all the couplets. It took me nearly a year to complete the portrait with 1,330 couplets,” says Shalini, who wants to become a teacher. She says she has more interest in pencil sketching.
Her younger sister K. Kirubha, who also studies B.A. English in the same college, won a number of Karate events at the State and National levels.
She started learning Karate at the age of 11 and was awarded black belt at the age of 15. She wants to become an IPS officer.
