Chitradurga: Traditional music, folk dances and a procession of tableaux marked “Gadinadu Utsav” at Madhavapura village in Challakere taluk on Thursday. The event was organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture and Kannada Abhivruddhi Pradhikara in association with Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat to promote Kannada in the border areas of the district. The village was spruced up for the occasion. The procession passed through the narrow lanes of the village with schoolchildren and folk artistes participating in it. Addressing the gathering at the Government School Ground after inaugurating the event, writer G.S. Siddalingaiah said though Kannada was one of the ancient languages, it was yet to get the classical language status. He recalled the role of Kannada poets and writers such as Kuvempu, Masti Venkatesh Iyengar, Da. Ra. Bendre and K.S. Nisar Ahmed in enriching the language. He made it clear that “Gadinadu Utsav” was being organised to protect Kannada and culture. “We must respect other languages too,” he said Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat president Geeta Nandini Gowda and former Minister Tippeswamy was present.
