Six thefts on the same night

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Six thefts occurred within a radius of 500 meters near Tulasinagar and Godavarishnagar areas of the city on Thursday night.

These areas are by the side of the NH 217 that passes through the city and are always under strict vigil of police patrol. Although the thefts were not large yet it proved to be a major challenge for the city police. It is suspected that it was the handiwork of a single gang. Four roadside shops, a restaurant and a locked house had become target of this series of thefts. They had broken open the doors of three kiosks at Bengali street square and taken away cash and other items kept in these kiosks. Their next target was a stationary shop at Tulasinagar. Again the items kept for sell and the cash kept inside was taken away. At Godavarish Nagar cash and utensils were taken away from a locked restaurant. In the same area they also broke into a locked house, whose owners were on a visit to Puri and took away the valuables. Police are yet to arrest anyone in relation to these thefts. Although the thefts were not of any large amount the way the thieves could act at open spaces near main roads like the national highway has put questions on claims of strict patrolling by the city police, said a resident.
