‘Drivers alone cannot be blamed for accidents’
Staff Reporter
Government urged not to cancel vehicle permits of drivers
NAMAKKAL: The State Lorry Owners Federation of Tamil Nadu has appealed to the State Government not to cancel the vehicle permit and the licence of the driver temporarily if an accident case was booked under section 304 (A) of Indian Penal Code.
A resolution to this effect was passed at the annual general body meeting of the federation held here recently. The resolution claimed the drivers alone could not be blamed for the road accidents.
Resolution
The lorry operators were facing difficulties if the permits were cancelled. The federation sought the intervention of the Chief Minister to resolve this issue.
In another resolution, members alleged that transport and police officials were collecting heavy fines from lorry drivers and harassing them. They wanted the Government to initiate stringent measures to put an end to this issue.
The Federation demanded the State Government to take efforts to prevent the operators from overloading of lorries. The Government should also withdraw a rule, which states that a Standard VIII qualification was necessary for obtaining a driving licence. The federation also urged the Central and State Governments to improve the highways. Federation president P. Sengodan presided over the meeting.
