PATHANAMTHIITA: Arundhati Roy, writer and social activist, has expressed solidarity with the Sadhu Jana Vimochana Samyukta Vedi activists who have been occupying the Kumbazha Estate of Harrisons Malayalam Ltd. at Chengara, near Konni, for the past four months. Ms. Roy who called on the encroachers on Friday extended full support to the Vedi’s struggle to facilitate land for the landless. She said the Vedi’s stir for land had many a similarity to the ongoing agitation at Nandigram in West Bengal. She said if the agitation in Nandigram was to protect the common man’s land from capitalist forces, the agitation at Chengara was to release land from the clutches of capitalist forces. The Vedi workers encroached upon the private plantation on August 5, demanding five acres of land suitable for agriculture and Rs.50,000 in cash for each landless family. More families joined the illegal occupants, expanding their area of occupation, in the weeks that followed.
