PWD to study government school buildings: Rangasamy

“National-level sportspersons will get incentive soon”


Rs. 50 lakh will be spent on the 34th Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition, which will begin on December 21

PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Friday said that the Public Works Department would be directed to conduct a study of all government school buildings. Speaking at a prize distribution function of a regional-level science exhibition for schools here, he said several old school buildings that were weak were being demolished and new ones constructed in their place.

As announced earlier, the government would shortly distribute Rs. 70 lakh as incentive to sportspersons, who had won prizes at the national-level, he said.

Expressing happiness over the enthusiastic participation of children in the exhibition, Mr. Rangasamy said that the government had spent Rs. 3 lakh on regional-level science exhibitions and Rs. 7 lakh on State-level exhibition.

School expenditure

“We also provide a certain amount of funds to schools for their own expenditure, which can be used for science exhibitions.”

The Chief Minister said that a total of Rs. 50 lakh would be spent on the conduct of the 34th Jawaharlal Nehru Science Exhibition, which would be held from December 21 in Puducherry. President Prathiba Patil would visit the Union Territory in this connection. Students from 36 States and Union Territories would be participating, he said.

Mr. Rangasamy presented awards to students whose exhibits were selected.

Over 380 exhibits

Students from around 150 government and private schools presented over 380 exhibits at the exhibition.

This year’s main theme was ‘Science and technology and planet earth’ with sub themes on water management, agriculture and food, energy resources, disaster management, mathematical modelling and educational technology.

MLA Om Sakti Sekar, Deputy Chairman of the Puducherry Municipality A. John Kumar and Director of School Education G. Ragesh Chandra also spoke.
