Experts seek simpler tax laws for better collections

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The All-India Tax Advocates’ Forum has expressed deep anguish at frequent changes in the tax policies of the Delhi Government. Rather than streamlining and simplifying the tax structure, some of these policies have complicated the issue to the detriment of the traders who form the backbone of the city’s economy, it said.

Forum president M. K. Gandhi said on Friday that the Delhi Government had now designated five or six officers for distribution of statutory forms as against the earlier practice of distributing forms in all the 106 wards. As a result, he said, long queues are seen now outside the offices of these designated officers.

“This is resulting in loss of time and human energy and has also resulted in harassment to the traders and corruption in the department,” he charged

Mr. Gandhi demanded that the Government reopen the ward offices at the earliest. This, he emphasised, would not only smoothen the Government’s work but also bring about much-needed transparency in distribution and collection of the statutory forms.

He called for simplification of the tax laws for the overall benefit of the trading community and for boosting the Government’s tax collection.
