Two children bag bravery awards

Special Correspondent

HONOUR: Vishnu and Bijin who have been chosen to receive the President’s national bravery awards.

Thiruvananthapuram: Two children from Kerala figure in the list of winners of the President’s national bravery awards released by the Indian Council for Child Welfare. They are C.S. Vishnu of Thrissur and Bijin Babu of Kollam.

P. Krishnan, general secretary of the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare, said eight-year-old Vishnu, a Class III student of Nadippara Inchakundu Lourdpuram Government Upper Primary School, bagged the award for saving his friend, Sreerag, from drowning in the pond of a quarry.

Five-year-old Sreerag and his friends had gone to take a bath in the pond, which had nearly 20 ft of water.

On being told by friends that Sreerag was fighting for his life, Vishnu reached the pond, dived into the water and saved Sreerag. Vishnu is the son of Sivan, a manual labourer, and Malathi.

Bijin saved two lives – of Akash, 14, and Nidhin, 15 – from the tricky waters of the Kubavurutty kayam in Oyur in Kollam district. The two teenagers were part of a team of 22 students and three teachers which had come from Kottarakkara to the Ayyankovil forest area as part of an environment study camp. Bijin is a Plus One science student of Sankaramangalam Kottara school.

He is the son of Babu and Annie of Kadambattuvila, Paruthiyara, Odanavattam. His brother Bins Babu is a first year student in the Saptagiri Engineering College.

The awards will be presented to the children by the Prime Minister at the Republic Day function in New Delhi on January 26.

They had won the bravery awards of the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare too.

Felicitation

Vishnu and Bijin, along with Nigin Joy and K.A. Tahir of Ernakulam and A. Anu of Thrissur, will be honoured by Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan at a function at the Child Welfare Council hall at Thycaud here on Wednesday.
