KOCHI: The Lakshadweep administration has signed a contract with Vipul Shipyard, Goa, for building six barges. These are intended for carrying passengers to bigger ships for embarking and disembarking operations The first barge is to be delivered to the administration in October, 2008. B.V. Selvaraj, Administrator of Lakshadweep, and Vipul Ameen, Managing Director of Vipul Shipyard, were among the dignitaries present on the occasion. The deployment of the new barges would help eliminate the uncertainties in operation as smaller craft were facing problems to operate in rough sea, according to the administration.
