Peaceful bandh in Kolar; schools remain closed

Staff Correspondent

It was to protest against Janata Dal (S) action

KOLAR: A bandh call given by the Bharatiya Janata Party to protest against the action of the Janata Dal (Secular) in withdrawing support to the B.S. Yeddyurappa-led Government evoked mixed response here on Friday.

The bandh passed off peacefully, the police said. Schools and shops remained closed.

The police dispersed BJP activists who were trying to enforce the bandh.

Though shops and commercial establishments downed their shutters, government offices, banks and courts functioned as usual. Private vehicles plied as usual while Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses went off the road as a precautionary measure causing hardship to commuters.

Students from rural areas who came to the city to attend classes were put to inconvenience as rural buses were cancelled.

BJP activists, led by district unit Uribagil Srinivas, staged a dharna at the KSRTC bus stop. They raised slogans against the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, and the former Chief Minister, H.D. Kumaraswamy, for their alleged treachery. The police have made heavy bandobast.
