PATNA: Sunil Singh, one of the accused in the murder case of former Bihar minister Brij Bihari Prasad, consumed poison in the Beur jail here. Singh, who was admitted to the hospital on Thursday after he began retching and vomiting, died on Friday morning in the intensive care unit of Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH). “Singh could not be saved despite our best efforts and died around 5 am,” Vijay Achari, the doctor attending on him told PTI. The deceased’s relative and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader Lalan Singh, who had unsuccessfully contested the last Assembly election from Mokama, said Sunil was in depression after his bail petition was rejected by the Supreme Court and probably committed suicide because of that. Jail Superintendent Dilip Kumar Singh said it was being ascertained how the deadly substance reached the prisoner, but suspected that the deceased got it during one of his routine productions before the trial court. Brij Bihari Prasad, a former Bihar minister for Science and Technology, was shot dead in judicial custody at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in 1998. Prasad was in judicial custody in connection with his alleged involvement in irregular admissions to various technical institutions in the state.
