Tata Teleservices ready to offer 3G technology

R. Sairam

Says its Chief Operating Officer

Tamil Nadu has six lakh new mobile users every month, the largest growing market in the country

“We are the fastest growing telecom company”

MADURAI: Tata Teleservices (TTS) is ready to offer 3G technology in mobile services with the requisite hardware already in place. The company only needed to upgrade its software, said its Chief Operating Officer of Tamil Nadu, Srinivas Rao Sarapalli.

A part of the Tata Group conglomerate, TTS was incorporated in 1995 and was the first company to offer code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile services in India under the brand name ‘Tata Indicom.’

He said that the CDMA handsets of Tata Indicom were data enabled and technologically superior to global system for mobile communication (GSM) handsets.

3G is third generation of mobile phone standards and technology, after 2G, that enables network operators to offer a wider range of advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency.

“The beauty of CDMA technology is that the handsets, be it low end or high end, are Internet-enabled. While one can browse easily in low end phones, even heavy downloads are possible in our high end phones,” he said in an interview here on Tuesday. CDMA was the technology of the future for mobile services, he added.

Drawing comparison with GSM sets, he said that General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) was not available for GSM users in all cities, which was not the case with CDMA users. “Only those GSM handsets with 2.5 G capability can offer GPRS.”

Huge market

Tamil Nadu, with six lakh new mobile users being added on an average every month across all operators, was one of the largest growing markets in the country, said Mr. Srinivas Rao Sarapalli.

Tata Indicom had a market presence of 11 per cent nation-wide and about 6 per cent in the State.

“We were the last to enter the market here. However, for the past two years, we are the fastest growing telecom company,” he said.
