Focus on climate

KOCHI: Fisheries expert P.S.B.R James has called for adopting precautionary measures and adaptation plans to meet the challenges of climate change.

Presenting a paper at the Asian Fisheries Forum that is on at Kochi, Dr. James suggested that establishment of research monitoring and coordination cell for Indian fisheries should be considered for studying climate change.

P. Jayasankar, scientist of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, said that the scientists of the institute had standardised technology to accurately identify marine mammals using molecular taxonomy.

According to Dr. Jayasankar, the technology was vital in tracking illegal trading of whales, dolphins and dugongs.
