Guha sees challenges to India’s democracy

Special Correspondent

Highlights the threat of religious bigotry

CHENNAI: The threat of religious bigotry on the right wing of the political spectrum, the rise of the Maoist movement in the heartland of central and eastern India on the left wing, corruption and corrosion of the established democratic order, policy incoherence caused by coalition governments, especially in economic development, and environmental degradation are the challenges to the country’s democracy, Ramachandra Guha, historian, said on Thursday.

Delivering a lecture at a meeting organised by the Madras High Court and members of the Madras Bar to commemorate the 60th year of Independence, he said the earlier predictions that the country would balkanise, face mass famine and would come under military leadership, underestimated the resilience of public institutions.

Presiding over the meeting, Madras High Court Chief Justice A.P. Shah said Jawaharlal Nehru’s address on the eve of Independence had outlined three commitments to be made by people. They were the focus on the practice of democracy and guaranteeing various freedoms of the citizens, removal of social inequality and backwardness that characterised the British India and achieving economic progress judged primarily in terms of how it affected the conditions of the poor.

“Our record in respect of these three commitments has been diverse,” he said.
