Letters to the Editor
India is very sensitive as far as religious issues are concerned. We have enough of our own writers, speakers and public men and women whose words and acts lead to upheavals in some communities. Should we have a foreigner to add fuel to the fire? Taslima’s works have caused havoc in our society leading to the formation of opposing schools of thought. It would be better if she leaves the country. N. Nageswaran,
Chennai The extension of Taslima’s visa was avoidable. Our country already has its cup of woes. The innocent should not be made scapegoats in the name of protecting freedom of speech. We must think twice before taking any decision that may disturb the fragile peace in the country. As it is, we are clueless to the innumerable bomb blasts that shatter the lives of thousands of our countrymen. The people who favour Taslima’s visa extension should ponder over why she has not approached any other secular nation for citizenship or asylum. Sure, we can protect Taslima but not the innocent Sneha Tripathis. Let us be pragmatic. Rettavayal S. Krishnaswamy,
Chennai
