Egmore station getting a facelift
Krishna Velupillai
CHENNAI: As the Egmore railway station prepares to celebrate its centenary year, its buildings are rapidly getting a facelift.
Old service buildings to the north of the station are being demolished and the authorities are planning new buildings with modern facilities and additional floors.
An official at the station said that the space in the old buildings was not being fully utilised and plans were under way for new buildings to house not just the existing offices, but also to make way for a new booking office. According to the official, the new building will have a larger waiting hall. The existing facilities — mostly union offices and restrooms — will be given space in a makeshift arrangement until the construction is completed.
In addition to the new buildings, a new cycle stand is coming up. Separate entrances for two-wheelers and cycles are being provided.
Platforms 1, 2, 3 and 4 are being provided with granite flooring and improvements to platforms 6 and 8 are nearing completion. The entire process is expected to take six months.
