A major task for police Law and order
They embark on intensive operation to avert accidents, says S. Vijay Kumar
Managing traffic to minimise road accidents has emerged as a major task for the Madurai district police. With four National Highways passing through the district and all of them having many accident-prone stretches, the police have embarked on an intensive ‘Education, Enforcement and Engineering’ operation to avert accidents. To start with, the focus will be more on enforcement.
Police personnel attached to local police stations, highway patrol, night rounds and vehicle checking teams have been instructed to take firm action on cases pertaining to over speeding, drunken driving and dazzling headlights as a majority of the accidents take place due to these factors. As on date this year, 301 road accidents were reported in the district in which 323 persons were killed while 78 others suffered grievous injuries. “In cases of road accidents resulting in deaths, we are recommending cancellation of driving licence of the driver involved. Even in case of habitual offenders of drunken driving, proposals have been made to suspend the licence. On an average, 90 cases of drunken driving are being booked,” says a police official.
According to the Samayanallur DSP, P.C. Thangaraj, warning boards alerting road users of accident-prone zones have been erected at many places in the Madurai-Dindigul NH.
However, one of the factors discouraging the police on the enforcement aspect is that there is no provision to levy fine on violators of Motor Vehicles Act. Even when specific cases are booked for violations there is no mobile or exclusive court to expedite the cases. Hundreds of cases booked for such offences get lapsed as no further action was taken for a long period, police sources added.
