CHANDIGARH: Haryana Governor A.R. Kidwai on Friday advocated dissemination of the high ideals and teachings of great men to usher in peace and tranquillity around the world. Inaugurating a two-day seminar on the 800th birth anniversary of Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi, one of the great mystic poets who lived in Iran, Afghanistan and Turkey, Dr. Kidwai appreciated the UNESCO’s gesture in declaring 2007 as the year of Maulana Rumi. Education Minister Mange Ram Gupta called for propagation of the teachings of great sufis and saints as the world was passing through a phase of tension and hatred. The Director of the Iran Culture House, Dr. Abdul Hamid Ziaei, who was the chief guest, said earlier saints shunned discussing God but Rumi believed that “God is not only nearest to us but is in our heart always.” Prof. Chander Sekhar, Head of the Persian Department of University of Delhi, said such seminars would keep alive the ages-old cultural ties between India and Iran.
