Special Correspondent

The victim ran and tried to get in

TAMBARAM: A 54-year-old man died of injuries on Thursday, a day after he fell under the wheels of a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus that he tried to board while it was moving in Medavakkam near Tambaram.

Tambaram Traffic (Investigation) police said Munusamy of Kovilambakkam was waiting at the Medavakkam junction bus stop on Wednesday evening to board a bus back home. Around 7 p.m., he ran behind a V 51 (East Tambaram - T.Nagar) low-floor semi-deluxe bus fitted with automatic doors.

He tried to get hold of the handgrip attached to the front doors but fell and came under the rear wheels of the bus. He was admitted to the Government Royapettah Hospital in a critical condition, where he died on Thursday.

Traffic police said the victim ran and tried to board the bus, but was unable to do as the automatic doors were locked. Driver S. Kumar, who has been arrested, did not notice the victim running alongside the bus. MTC officials said there was no fault on the part of the driver, nor was there a mechanical fault.
