GLITTERING GATHERING: Government Higher Secondary School children in Peerkankaranai celebrate Kaarthigai Deepam on Thursday.
TAMBARAM: Girl students of Government Higher Secondary School in Peerkankaranai near Tambaram stayed back after class hours on Thursday.
But they were not attending special coaching classes or to rehearse for cultural programmes as part of their Annual Day celebrations.
A few hundred girl students lined up beside the neatly drawn ‘kolams’ and held lamps in their hands to usher in the ‘Kaarthigai Deepam’ festival.
School authorities said they made it a point to celebrate all festivals, be it Deepavali, Ramzan, Christmas or Pongal.
During the recently concluded Navarathri, the students took part in the festivities .
As ‘Kaarthigai Deepam’ was an important festival integral to Tamil Nadu, they wanted to kindle the interest among the students.
Teachers told students that ‘Karthigai Deepam’ was a festival of lights and unique to Tamil Nadu.
The festival found mention even in some ancient Tamil texts, dating back to the period of 200 A.D-300 A.D.
The students were asked to take the festive spirit back to their houses.
School authorities said such events brought about a sense of unity and teamwork among the students.
