Government urged to drop move to restructure agriculture department

Special Correspondent

“Agriculture sector in doldrums in the State”

A committee of agriculture experts and government officials should be constituted

THANJAVUR: State general secretary of CPI(M)-affiliated Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam K. Balakrishnan has appealed to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to drop the move to re-structure agriculture department.

A committee of agriculture experts and government officials should be constituted and its recommendations taken into consideration before attempting any re-structuring, he said.

“What we need is a comprehensive re-structuring that might help both agriculture and agriculture department,” Balakrishnan told presspersons here on Thursday.

In a fax message sent to the Chief Minister, a copy of which was released to the press, Balakrishnan said that agriculture sector was in the doldrums in the State.

The contribution of agriculture to the economy of the State, which stood at 26 per cent in 1995-96, is now only 13 per cent.

Modernisation of agriculture has not taken place. While private companies had come out with various varieties of seeds during the last decade, Tamil Nadu Agriculture University had not come out with any new variety in the past ten years, Balakrishnan alleged.

The Government was fulfilling only 17 per cent of the seed needs of the State and appointment of agricultural officers had not been made, he said.

“In the place of a three-tier system _ Joint Director of Agriculture at district level, Assistant Director of Agriculture at Taluk level and Agriculture Officers at the field level, the government is trying to make it two-tier. This is not good,” he added.
