Smalin Jenita shifted to Tiruchi hospital

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: Smalin Jenita (23), a victim of alleged dowry harassment by her husband and in-laws in the United States, was admitted to a private hospital here on Friday.

Severely bruised and with a brain injury, she was stated to be stable and out of coma. Family sources said she was undergoing treatment including speech therapy and physiotherapy.

Ms. Jenita, hailing from Tiruchi, was married a year ago. Her husband admitted her to a hospital in North Carolina claiming their car had met with an accident.

Ms. Jenita had sustained injuries on her neck, spinal chord and pelvic region, and was unable to speak.

Her family alleged that Ms. Jenita was pushed out of the car by her husband and in-laws. She was flown to Chennai from the U.S. on November 18.

A complaint alleging dowry harassment and for abandoning the victim who was 28 weeks pregnant would be lodged on Saturday before the Commissioner of Police Shankar Jiwal, said Justin Vasundharaj, Ms. Jenita’s brother.
