CPI for a new ideology-based alliance: Pandian
D. Pandian
MADURAI: The Communist Party of India will explore the possibility of a new ideology-based alliance with like-minded parties, its State secretary D. Pandian has said.
Talking to reporters here on Friday, he said protecting labour rights and working towards eradicating corruption would be the common points for such an alliance. He opposed imperialistic and communal forces.
Saying that the Centre’s economic policy lacked clarity, he said the party’s national committee meeting in Chennai from January 17 to 19 would discuss the Centre’s economic and foreign policies.
Mr. Pandian sought a minimum support price of Rs.1,000 for paddy on a par with that of wheat. He wanted the Centre to ban private and foreign companies from procuring food grains. “These companies are buying food grains not for trading, but to produce ethanol and to make huge profit since the price of crude oil is shooting up in international market. This is a dangerous trend.”
Seeking a legislation to regulate conversion of wetlands for purposes other than cultivation, he said the State Government should not consider acquisition of these lands, even for special economic zones.
On the on-going strike by medicos, Mr. Pandian said the Centre should consider providing incentives to encourage trained doctors to work in rural areas.
Alleging that the police were aware of the functioning of mercenaries in the State, he said efforts should be taken to nip “political backing” and “police cooperation” to anti-social elements.
The State Government should call for a meeting of political parties, retired judges and police officers and take steps to implement the recommendations of various committees to control such gangs.
On the Periyar dam issue, Mr. Pandian said the Kerala Government should “recognise” the Supreme Court verdict and accordingly raise the water level to 142 feet, instead of talking about constructing a new dam.
