Call for healthcare infrastructure
Staff Reporter
S. Krishnasamy
Coimbatore: Puthiya Tamizhagam leader K. Krishnasamy on Friday said creation of health care infrastructure in rural areas was the need of the hour, adding that extending the duration of the MBBS course to ensure compulsory rural service was unwelcome.
Talking to reporters here on Friday, Dr. Krishnasamy said the decision of Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss to increase the duration of the course by a year would be detrimental to medical education. The compulsory rural service for medicos at the entry level in the profession would not benefit the rural population.
At present, primary health centres had adequate doctors to treat minor ailments. The rural health care segment lacked necessary equipment, such as ECG, x-ray machines, those for diagnosing diabetes and blood pressure and operation theatres for maternity care. He urged the Union Health Minister to drop the decision. Otherwise, the Puthiya Tamizhagam would stage a protest in front of the Union Health Minister’s house in New Delhi, he said.
