Inter-departmental teams to study causes of fatal road accidents

K.T. Sangameswaran

To submit comprehensive reports suggesting remedial measures

Teams will visit accident spots

Decision follows proposal from Transport Commissioner

CHENNAI: Concerned at the increasing number of road accidents, the State Government has ordered formation of inter-departmental teams to identify factors responsible for fatal mishaps.

The teams will submit comprehensive reports suggesting remedial measures.

The decision followed a proposal from the Transport Commissioner, which said a team comprising officers drawn from Police, Transport and Highways departments could be formed. It could visit accident spots and identify the contributory factors.

The Government ordered constitution of the teams for each area.

They will comprise the Inspector of Police concerned, the Senior Motor Vehicle Inspector of the area and the Assistant Engineer of the Highways Department.

The teams will visit the accident spots the same day or the next day and make a comprehensive study.

After analysing the data they will prepare a detailed report with specific recommendations on punitive, preventive and remedial measures to prevent recurrence of accidents and submit them within three days to the Transport Commissioner and the Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) through District Collectors.

The order to form the teams is part of the efforts to increase road safety.

Over 9,000 dead

Till September end this year, 9,230 persons lost their lives in road accidents in the State. In 2006, as many as 11,009 persons died in accidents.

At a meeting of police officers on Thursday, the Chief Minister had expressed concern over accidents and suggested that the Police and Transport departments jointly take remedial steps.

At present, accidents are investigated by various agencies mainly for requirements of law and insurance claims. Through the teams’ efforts, the exact causal factors will be identified and remedial measures initiated.

When contacted, Transport Commissioner C.P. Singh said the teams were being formed.
