Agri Intex 2007 with 200-odd stalls will be on till November 26
PICK AND CHOOSE: Visitors taking a look at organically grown vegetables and fruits at an Agri Intex 2007 stall at the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex in Coimbatore on Thursday. COIMBATORE: Agri Intex 2007, an international agricultural exhibition at the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex, comes as a welcome change from other agricultural fairs. At such fairs one can normally expect to see farm implements, equipment, seeds, fertilizers and pesticides and a whole array of nurseries. All these and more can be found at Agri Intex. The organisers – Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA) – and stall owners have ensured that the farming community is exposed to the concept of value-addition. Food processing and post-harvest technology methods have been highlighted. Tips can be obtained on contract and organic farming. Many stalls have displayed value-added products that have been processed. Jams, pickles, pastes, squashes, juices, masala powders and health drinks manufactured by companies, are available for sale. There are stalls put up by the Government departments, the Coir Board, Coconut Development Board, Spices Board and Coffee Board. Farmers and industry personnel can find many of the products here useful in their everyday working. Tractor oil, pumps, environment measurement equipment, PVC pipes, novel sowing equipment, different forms of plastics, electric saws, mosquito and insect proofing materials and repellents are available. For those who like to try their entrepreneurial skills in farming, there are people to guide you to become a mushroom grower or take up a cottage industry. Varsity’s presenceSince the exhibition is being organised with the support of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, almost all departments of the university have been represented in as many stalls. There are also some stalls put up by Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University to showcase latest breakthroughs and products in animal husbandry. The exhibition with 200-odd stalls that will be on till November 26 is an attempt to educate and update the farming community about the latest technologies. For the layman, there are the usual oddities such as the chappati-maker, slimming belts, steam inhalers, cushion covers, sofa backs, mixers, electric cookers, and the like. They will also get an opportunity to choose from innovative coir and coconut products, aromatic coffee and spices, and knick knacks made by women from self-help groups.
