Clarify policy on common curriculum

Staff Reporter

Shock over advocating Tamil as medium

TIRUCHI: While appreciating the idea of introducing a common curriculum for Matriculation, State Board, Anglo Indian and Oriental Boards, the Association of Managements and Principals of Matriculation Schools in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry has expressed shock over the Dr. Muthukumaran report advocating Tamil as the medium of instruction for all subjects.

As per the Matric code, Matriculation schools are purely English Medium schools and enjoy a special identity, association general secretary E. Venkatachalapathy said urging the Education Department to clarify its policy regarding the future of Matriculation schools.

With constant upgradation of curriculum, the Matric syllabus is on an even keel with the CBSE and ICSE patterns and if the common syllabus is implemented the quality of education in Matriculation schools would be diluted, Mr. Venaktachalapathy apprehended, expressing concern over the reduction of the total marks of the Matriculation examination to 500 on par with State Board examination.

The practical examination in science subjects in matriculation schools is comparatively advanced.

He said the Matriculation schools were anxious to know what the Government’s proposal is as regards printing of text books.

Currently, the Matric schools are prescribing books from different companies.

Anticipate difficulties

The Education department must anticipate the difficulties it is bound to encounter while implementing the common curriculum and remove bottlenecks beforehand.

Requesting the Government to postpone the implementation of the common curriculum by two years, the association also urged the Government to strengthen all schools both academically and administratively considering that school system is the base on which higher education could be strengthened.
