District Industries Centre sets a target of

130 manufacturing units

Entrepreneurs are entitled to a subsidy component of Rs.12,500

TIRUCHI: District Industries Centre (DIC) has received 137 applications from entrepreneurs for starting their own enterprises.

Of them, 74 have applied for starting manufacturing units, and the rest wish to foray into services.

About 160 applications were distributed during the Dissemination meet on Prime Minister Rozgar Yojana (PMRY) that the DIC organised recently in association with the Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries’ Association (TIDITSSIA).

The DIC has set a target of commissioning 130 manufacturing units.

More motivational meetings are in the offing, said DIC General Manager B. Baskaran.

Over the recent past, the DIC has been creating awareness on the enlarged scope for starting ventures with substantial investment owing to the enhancement of credit limit for an applicant under PMRY from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

No collateral security

An individual starting a venture under the scheme is entitled to a subsidy component of Rs. 12,500, and there is no collateral security requirement.

Those who have passed standard VIII and in the age group of 18 to 35 years are eligible.

Age relaxation

Ten years of age relaxation is provided for women, SC/ST youths, ex-servicemen and physically handicapped applicants.

The DIC got experts in machine shops, banana fibre products, synthetic gem manufacture, fabrication, silk reeling, and business process outsourcing to address the applicants. Against the backdrop of a resurgence in gem cutting, sericulture and BHEL’s expansion plans, the environment was ideal to start small ventures, said C. Ramaswamy Desai, Project Director, TIDITSSIA – Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development.

Revival of gem cutting

According to R. Sridharan, Advisor, Tamil Nadu Synthetic Diamond All Manufacturers’ Association, and C. Sam Devadas, Assistant Director, District Sericulture Centre, there is strong scope for reviving the prominence of central districts in gem cutting and silk reeling.
